The second dial is designed to stop false alarms caused by pets. It does this by disabling the lower sensor window on the motion sensor. This prevents your dog, cat, or smaller size pet from causing false alarms as they move about your home.

Luckily, the main sensor can still view the room with very little loss in coverage.
