Operating Security Alarm Systems

Most zones in a security system must be “Armed” or “Turned On” to operate.

Security systems must be armed to monitor all the zones. Arming a system or turning it on, can be done manually or on a set schedule.

Some zones assigned to the system, can be given a zone type that is always on. Glass break sensors can be set up to alarm 24-hours a day. Fire alarm zones are always monitored 24/7. Duress or panic alarm zone types also provide 24-hour protection. Assigning fire or duress zone types to devices like motion sensors or door contacts is not permitted.

When armed manually, the alarm system must verify that each zone is secure prior to arming. This means that there cannot be any motion or open doors while arming a security alarm system.
